Homeschool Versus Public School

The concept of homeschooling has been embraced by millions of parents in an attempt to overcome issues often associated with sending kids to a public school. Today, the school has become a rather dangerous and scary place to be. Suicides, firearms, bullies and degrading of the traditional American values account for some of the biggest reasons for a homeschooling. It is much safer and healthier for your kids to be in. Homeschooling also allows parents the comfort and luxury of tailoring the curriculum and learning pace to suit each child’s individual needs.

However, the debate over whether homeschooling or public school makes the best leaning environment for kids remains a big issue.
Let’s look at 5 reasons why parents are slowly moving away from public schools.

#1: Lack of Quality Education

Many parents agree that the level of education offered in public schools are low in quality and are degrading each day. There is a tendency to focus on the lowest common denominator where smart kids have to subordinate their rapid of learning to accommodate the slower learners.

#2: Bad Influence

It is normal to send an innocent toddler to public schools and get him back in the evening with a couple of profane swearing and four letter words added to his dictionary. As if this isn’t enough, teens are also sharing their experiences as they watch their friends practicing unsafe behavior such as engaging in unprotected sex and doing drugs.

#3: Limited Scope

Public Schools offer very limited scope of education and the child will have to learn whatever is included in the curriculum. There is no opportunity to diversity into areas that really interest them. There are very limited choices available, if offered in these public schools.

#4: Lack of Control

Attending public schools means that you don’t have a control over the pace of study, the subjects that your child is most interested in and the ability to tailor the learning methodology to suit your child’s needs and preference. If your child is a slow leaner, chances are he might be left behind as the year progresses and you will have to arrange for additional classes to tutor him just to enable him to catch up with the rest of the pack. If he is a bright student, he will often feel bored waiting for the pages to turn and the rest of the class to follow when he has already understood most of the concepts explained.

#5: Degrading Moral Values

It is common to associate schools as being the number one factor that causes the Great American values to deteriorate. Traditional ways are fast being replaced with the more selfish, self-centered approach in this competitive and fast paced environment. It is very difficult for your child to keep up with the demands of the hectic lifestyle and yet strives to maintain good values you may have inculcated during this early formative year. As peer pressure becomes the strongest factor that contributes to the development of character during this time, public schools would pay a very important role in deciding how your child would eventually turn out to be as a person.

The bottom line is that while there may be some negative effects of homeschooling, the benefits far outweigh them. And given the direction public schools are going, along with endemic budgetary shortfalls which result in larger classrooms and fewer teachers, this gap is only going to grow.
